The holiday season is here and your dose of beauty inspiration has
arrived in the nick of time! We don’t know about you, but for us,
getting glammed up is (more than) half the fun of any special event. In
that spirit, we’ve created three attention-grabbing holiday party makeup
looks that are just as much fun to create as they are to wear. We
combed both runways and red carpets to incorporate the best beauty
trends and hottest colour palettes for the season, so however you’re
celebrating, these holiday makeup tutorials will make sure you do so
with killer style.

Our first holiday makeup tutorial is a festive take on the ombré
trend. We’ll show you how to create gorgeous colour gradients in warm
shades of cranberry and plum on both your eyes and lips. While this look
is ultra pretty and feminine, the presence of double-thick false lashes
gives it more than a hint of sex appeal.

Next, we revisited the beautiful golden eyes seen at Dior’s Spring 2014 show
and kicked things up a notch with an infusion of violet shades. This
party-ready look is destined to become your go-to throughout this
holiday season, as it can easily be transformed with a simple switch.
Just keep the gold as your foundation and swap out the violet for any
other shade du jour! The best part? It will always match your outfit.

For the final holiday makeup tutorial, we’ve got your New Year’s Eve
look on lock. Taking inspiration from the sequinned silver eyes with a
flick of black liner at Chanel’s Fall 2013 show,
we dreamed up a look that is equal parts sparkly and smoky. The mix of
shining silver, smoked-out black and glittering gemstones is a perfect
for ringing in 2014.

Fashion trend: Coat

Fall’s abundance of oversized coats has us
following the motto: the bigger the better. Whether you prefer leather,
wool or fur, as temperatures drop the oversized coat is there to cater
to your layers.

Though the dropped shoulder coat is nothing new, the Fall 2013
runways reminded us all how much we love the androgynous style. After
months of light sundresses, Carven’s oversized topcoat almost makes us
excited for the cooler temperatures ahead (or at least for the fashions
that come with the seasonal change). Also promoting the trend was
Mugler, whose pastel dropped shoulder coat was positively futuristic and
Acne, whose leather version of the style reinforced our love for the
laid-back silhouette.

Max Mara, Salvatore Ferragamo and Paul and Joe had us shivering with
excitement with their furry take on the oversized coat. Altuzarra,
who’se clearly on a winning streak with his recent Woolmark prize,
offered a luxurious black and white fox-fur coat adding elegance to the
oversized look. Fur accents appeared in subtle ways as well, lining
oversized coats at Belstaff and Giambattista Valli and decorating hoods
at Prabal Gurung and Nina Ricci.

Advocators for printed versions of the trend include Rochas, whose
floral topcoat is the perfect summer-to-fall transition piece. Michael
Kors chose a black and blue camo print fur for his fresh take on the
oversized style, while the ever quirky Kenzo went with a unique eye
print for a coat in their Fall 2013 collection. Marc Jacobs tackled two
trends at once, presenting a dreamy plaid oversized coat, which oozed
androgynous glamour.

Bottega Veneta and Prabal Gurung took on the voluminous trend in
their own way, adding belts to oversized styles with angular shoulders
for a waist-cinching effect. The figure defining coats offer a more
feminine option for the oversized style.

Fashion trend: Black and White

The new wave of 1990s-inspired plaids, slip dresses and faded florals
marks the return of grunge this spring. Part punk, part working class,
grunge has been a recurring trend in fashion since the early 1990s. It
first crawled out from the underground in the late 1980s in response to
financial hardship, a backlash to capitalism and the emergence of
regional rock music. The Seattle-born style was popularized by front men
like Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain (his tortured-by-fame look included
moth-eaten sweaters, beat-up Chuck Taylor sneakers and shredded denim)
and Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder (fond of oversized plaid shirts paired with
baggy cut-offs and combat boots). Courtney Love, lead singer of Hole
and Cobain’s wife, brought her version of burnout beauty into the
spotlight with baby-doll dresses, smudged eyeliner and slashes of red
lipstick. Anti-fashion went mainstream and Gen Xers everywhere started
Goodwill hunting.

Designers began to take notice. Marc Jacobs based his Spring 1993
collection for Perry Ellis on this surprisingly influential slacker
style but gave it a decadent twist. Sleeveless flannel shirts were
produced in luxurious silk, thermal tops were woven in cashmere and
Chuck Taylors debuted in Duchesse silk. Then there was the skillful
layering: Full-length granny-floral dresses were worn over striped tops,
flowy skirts were left open to reveal hot pants underneath and crop
tops were worn over T-shirts and under button-ups. The media were
smitten and Jacobs won the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year Award
but the collection didn’t sell well. The king and queen of grunge—Cobain
and Love—were sent pieces from the collection, which they later burned.
In a 2010 interview with Women’s Wear Daily, Love shed some light on
this fiery situation: “We were punkers—we didn’t like that kind of
thing.”

Three-figure price tags and thrift store-inspired threads weren’t a
match made in retail heaven back then, but now luxury has been
redefined. This season, designers including Phillip Lim, Dries Van Noten
and Henry Holland are hoping to cash in on their tidier interpretations
of the 1990s trend. Spring 2013’s look is about juxtaposing luxe with
lowbrow, masculine with feminine and construction with deconstruction.
It’s artfully messy with an underlying polish. Van Noten put a soft spin
on it, showing plaids in taffeta, organza, mousseline and lamé. His
other spring standouts included oversized sheer button-down shirts
(perfect for layering) and white oblong sunnies similar to the ones
Cobain wore. Rochas continued this glam grunge theme with
vintage-inspired slip dresses (hello, Courtney), while Henry Holland
churned out lace and sheer-edged dresses that referenced the 1990s in
hues much deeper than his usual bright, bold mix. 3.1 Phillip Lim showed
bare midriffs, distressed denim, tie-front skirts that gave the
illusion of a flannel shirt around the waist, and tough sandals that
channelled Doc Martens, while Acne designer Jonny Johansson paired
sleeveless novelty tees with parachute skirts held together with utility
belts.

Grunge, in all its haute hybrids, is showing no sign of social
alienation this time around. The spring campaigns are high on
hobo-meets-hipster chic: Jacobs, the original guru of grunge, set his
latest Marc by Marc Jacobs ads in a gritty, graffiti-covered bathroom
and small alleyway, proving that loud colour, chaos and clashing prints
are the new must-haves. Somewhere, Kurt Cobain is flipping us the bird.

Brush Teeth and Impact of Attitude

Do Not Forget the Teeth

Often the care of teeth and gums is overlooked as potential health
risks.  However, with the oral cavity being the main way in which
parasites, bacteria, yeast, and fungus get into the body, taking time to
thoroughly brush and floss your teeth is important.  Keeping your mouth
clean is a great way to benefit your health.

Attitude

A negative attitude can have a negative impact on your health just as a
positive attitude can affect your health in a positive manner.  Living
well has a direct correlation with a positive outlook.  Keep smiling and
try to find the good in life, even when things are tough.

 Fighting Cancer

With today’s breakthroughs, there are many innovative ways to fight
cancer.  Although you may find this difficult to believe, the American
Institute for Cancer Research has come up with a surprising way to fight
cancer.  After conducting thorough studies, researchers found that
drinking tea, which contains antioxidants to help neutralize “free
radicals” helps to fight cancer.  While it is not a cure-all, if cancer
runs in your family, it certainly will not hurt to add tea to your daily
consumption.

Meditate and Listen to ME

Cholesterol Levels:

High cholesterol leads to hardening of arteries, which in turn, leads to
heart disease or attack.  Keep your intake of food healthy, limit the
amount of sugar you eat, and have your cholesterol checked.  If it is
higher than 200, ask your doctor for ways to reduce it.

Meditate:

Find some time away from noise and distractions for you.  Meditation can
come in many forms.  Whatever way you meditate, ensure that you are in a
quiet place with soft lighting, sit with good posture and in a
comfortable position, practice slow, rhythmic breathing, and concentrate
on something calm and relaxing.  Meditation is a great stress reducer,
which is vital for good health.

 Listen to ME:

If you know that you are not feeling “right” but the doctor tells you
everything is fine, listen to your body.  There is nothing wrong with
getting a second opinion.  If you are not comfortable with the doctor’s
advice, get another exam.  In addition, if you go to a doctor who tells
you that what you feel is in your head, or you are crazy, get out of
there immediately.  You know your body better than anyone does and you
need a doctor that believes in you and offers the right kind of support
and encouragement.

Beware of Allergies/Reactions, Breast Exams AND Asthmatics and Sports

Beware of Allergies/Reactions

Pay attention to what you eat.  With so many wonderful restaurants, trying new dishes is exciting and fun.  However, several foods are responsible for up to 90% of all allergy problems
If you notice after eating certain foods you suffer from headaches,
upset stomach, or other problems, make note, you could be having an
allergic reaction.  The foods most likely the problem include eggs,
milk, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, shellfish, and fish.  For children, the
common foods include cow’s milk, soy, eggs, and wheat.

 Breast Exams

Make sure you conduct regular breast examines.  This can quickly
and painlessly be done during your shower or lying down when going to
bed.  Contact your primary physician or gynecologist for a free pamphlet
showing the proper way this is done.  Taking proactive steps could save
your life.

 Asthmatics and Sports

If you suffer from asthma, you already know that some sports should be avoided,
depending on the severity.  If you have trouble on a daily basis and
love sports, be encouraged to know that some sports are asthma-friendly
and in fact, can be helpful in that they help make the lungs stronger.
These sports include swimming, cycling, and fishing, walking, and
canoeing.  Again, check with your physician before getting involved with
any sport if you have a health condition.

Body Fat

Body Fat:

When you think about losing weight, more importantly than weight is the
amount of fat you are carrying around.  This fat is measured with what
is called Body Mass Index, or BMI.  For women, if you are fit, your
percent of body fat should range from 21% to 31%.  If you are in
incredible shape, that could be as low as 10%.  For men, fit should be
between 14% and 25%, and excellent shape, as low as 2%.
To
calculate your body fat, write down how much you weigh (be honest – no
one will see this but you).  Multiply your weight by 703.  Next, write
down your height, in inches.  Multiply by that same number.  Then you
will divide your weight number by your height number.  That is your
BMI.  For example, if your weight were 150 pounds x 703, your weight
answer would be 105,450.  If your height is 5’4”, that would be 64
inches x 64 for a total of 4,096.  Taking the 105,450 divided by 4,096,
you come out with a BMI of 25.7.

Acupuncture and Biofeedback

The use of acupuncture dates back more than 2,000 years.  This is a traditional medicine of Japan, China, and other Eastern countries
The use of acupuncture is beneficial in that it stimulates areas of the
body that have a direct correlation to internal organs.  By placing
fine needles into specific points, the body is encouraged to promote
natural healing, improve function, and provide an overall boost to your
system.  When these needles are inserted, they go into Meridians, which
are channels somewhat like streams within the body.  Just as there might
be a boulder sitting in a stream blocking the flow of water, it can be
the same for the channels of blood in your system.  Acupuncture helps to
remove these obstacles by providing stimulation, thus improving health.

Biofeedback

Biofeedback is a method used to help blood pressure, muscle tension,
heart rates, brain activity, and other bodily functions.  Basically,
biofeedback is a painless system that is hooked up to your body and then
through electrical signals received from tightening of your muscles,
you would be able to receive those signals by a light telling you that
you are tightening your muscles.  This in turn trains you to be aware of
when you are bringing on stress and to help you identify when you need
to relax your body.  Biofeedback is very successful and can be used for
migraine headaches, chronic pain, high blood pressure, epilepsy, and
much more, which can occur when you tense up.

Therapeutic Massage

You might be thinking what does getting a massage do for my health other
than to make me feel good.  Actually, therapeutic massage has many
benefits.  For example, it can help alleviate pain, reduce stress, and
promote good health.  When a person gets a therapeutic massage, they are
actually getting the benefit of function improvement with circulatory,
muscular, skeletal, nervous systems, lymphatic, and can even help the
body heal after an illness or injury.  Depending on what the specific
health issue, there is a Swedish Massage, which is a more relaxing
massage good for headaches, back stress, and muscle cramps, Pressure
Point Therapy, helpful for some injuries as well as circulation
problems, headache and muscle tension, insomnia, anxiety, and more.
Finally, Sports Massage focuses on muscle groups used for different
sports.  Licensed masseuse can help with the issues mentioned as well as
allergies, arthritis, asthma, carpal tunnel syndrome, depression,
digestive disorders, myofascial pain, limited range of motion,
sinusitis, and TMJ.  The next time you tell someone you are going to get
a massage, you can simply explain that it is for the benefit of your
health.

Eat Less Later in the Day

Everyone knows, whether they want to admit it or not, reducing calories
will help you to lose weight.  However, just as you should reduce the
calorie intake, you need to know when to eat.  Breakfast is the most
important meal of the day and the one meal that should not be missed.
Lunch should be healthy but a less than what you ate for breakfast.  As
you approach dinner, eat healthy but light.  Avoid after dinner snacks
or eating before bed

Supplements and Vitamins

While some supplements and vitamins on the market are not worth
buying and some, such as Ephedrine, have been proven dangerous, other
sources are healthy.  Most important, you need to understand what it is
you are taking, and strictly follow dosage just as you would medication
that has been prescribed.  If you are unsure, check with your physician,
a nutritionist, or a reputable health food store.  Many supplements
that are good for overall health include grape seed extract, Glucosamine, aloe vera, and Selenium.  Vitamins to consider would include Vitamin E, Vitamin C, B-12, Iron, Magnesium, and Calcium.
