While you were sleeping: A writer takes the pyjama dressing trend out of the boudoir and into the light of day
When I was growing up, I used to visit my grandmother in Palm Beach,
where she wintered in a conch-pink pseudo Spanish-style condo called
(accurately) La Bonne Vie. My favourite activity was grocery shopping at
Palm Beach’s Publix—a glamorized supermarket washed a bunny-nose pink
with valet parking and bougainvillea-swathed archways. Here, tycoons
with Hermès-orange suntans and manses on Billionaire’s Row shuffled
through the aisles dressed in silken Persian pyjamas and monogrammed
velvet bedroom slippers, carts full of crab salad, their long-suffering
chauffeurs waiting outside in purring Bentleys. Wearing pyjamas outside
of the bedroom has historically been the habit of the egregiously
wealthy, the eccentric, the hyper-medicated on day passes—and the
freelance writer.
I’ll admit that as I write this, I’m sporting my favourite pair of
Liberty Print J.Crew man-jams. In my defense, it’s a grouchy-skied fall
afternoon, with clouds heaped like an unmade bedspread—ideal weather for
pyjama wearing, like clear skies and tail winds for pilots. But the
jammy trend du jour is hardly limited to oversized drawstring pants and
piped tops. For Louis Vuitton’s Fall 2013 fashion show,
models in dark ’50s wigs and plummy pouts drifted down the runway in
fur-edged peignoirs and lace-trimmed negligees half-hidden under
oversized astrakhan coats. The mise-en-scène: 50 numbered
wooden doors lined a catwalk-turned-walk-of-shame to evoke a plush,
tryst-inviting hotel, the sort where women in various stages of
post-indiscretion undress might wander before escaping into the dusky
wee smalls. The palette—decadent and drowsy—slipped from shades of
champagne to dreamy, moony blues to inky midnights. And the look, plush
with the poetry of melancholy, conjured that romantic liminal moment
before the first flush of dawn and the vulgar daytime glare of
consequence. For the occasion, Marc Jacobs took his bow
in PJs from Vuitton’s recent men’s collection. (The so-called Garden In
Hell pattern by British artists Jake and Dinos Chapman took inspiration
from Diana Vreeland’s red-lacquer apartment.) Meanwhile, for his Marc
Jacobs collection, the designer accoutred his models in dark,
well-mussed (presumably from time spent au lit) shag wigs and
glamourpuss silk pyjamas in shimmery shades of gold and gunmetal. (He
opted to don a pair of Prada ’jams for the bow.)
But Jacobs is not the only designer to introduce pyjamas to the light of day. For Rochas’s
Fall 2013 show, fluid silk ’jams in shades of raincloud grey were
paired with diamond necklaces for a look of coiffed indolence. There is
nothing as chic as leisure, and py-jamas are leisure’s timeless uniform.
Stella McCartney x Goop: New intel from Gwyneth Paltrow on what the power duo’s collab is all about
After a week of speculating what the highly anticipated collaboration between Stella McCartney and Gwyneth Paltrow could bring, WWD is putting our minds to rest with a sneak peek at the collection and an intimate interview between the BFFs.
The power duo—who met through celebrity personal trainer Tracy Anderson and spend their time hosting English garden parties in the Hamptons (nbd) and taking poolside Instagrams—we’re quick to point out that despite the collab seeming like a no-brainer, they wanted to make sure it was done right.
Considering how diverse Goop’s
offerings are, fans speculated that the Stella McCartney x Goop line
could be anything from athletic wear, to a vegan cookbook to a swimwear
line. But thanks to WWD, it has been confirmed that the capsule
collection will consist of classic clothing pieces that are in tune
with Gwyneth Paltrow’s style. As an actress known for her timeless style
on the red carpet, we can definitely expect beautiful minimalist pieces
featuring clean feminine lines.
“I wanted to make things that you’d leave to your daughter. My
audience loves an investment piece and nothing will last longer,”
Paltrow told WWD. “We could have done some brand-new trend
collection. For the first time, we wanted to work on something that was
very easy to understand.”
The limited collection will include everything a woman needs to feel
put together as well as comfortable in their day-to-day schedule,
including a classic black blazer, grey knit jumpsuit, jeans and wool
trousers. And an outfit is never complete without accessories: Goop will
also be introducing McCartney’s Beckett handbag in shades of black,
grey and white.
Stella McCartney x Goop prices will start at $795 and be available online as of September 13, 2014.
Kate Moss resumes her Topshop collaboration with a new collection for Spring 2014
Three and half years after the first Topshop and Kate Moss
collaboration, the brand has nabbed the Brit fashion icon for yet
another partnership. The Kate Moss Collection for Spring 2014 will
comprise of 40 pieces that represent the beauty’s current style
inspirations and London’s rising fashion influence.
“I am personally thrilled that Kate wanted to come back to Topshop to
work with us again. The first time around was such a lot of fun and she
has been sorely missed,” said Sir Phillip Green, owner of the high
street brand via press release. “The Topshop business has developed
extensively around the globe since we launched with Kate in 2007, and
it’s our intention to launch and sell this collection in all 40
countries world-wide where Topshop has a presence, in addition to
creating pop-ups in department stores around the globe.”
We are equally thrilled about this news, as Kate’s personal style has
gained major global fandom. Since she’s the essence of effortless style
we anticipate that the clothing, footwear and accessories collection
will include her signature knee high boots, festival-chic airy dresses
and vintage inspired minimal accessories. The first collaboration
debuted with the celebrated Brit posing in the display windows of the
Oxford Street store in London, we can only imagine how this new
collaboration will be launched come April 2014.

Even more Isabel Marant for H&M: The complete mens and kids collections
Just because we’re still salivating over the Isabel Marant for H&M womenswear collection doesn’t mean we can’t pause for a second (maybe just one) to talk about her equally amazing collections for men and kids.
Her first collection for men! With prices ranging from $30 to $350,
men can look forward to chic tailored coats, heavily printed sweaters
and biker styled leather pants that will definitely add European meets
Americana flair to the wardrobe. Don’t mind us if we decide to make our
way over to the men’s section to grab a few oversized sweaters for
ourselves.
With kids in the front row
becoming a fashion week trend in and of itself, it comes as no surprise
to see that the kid’s collection would be just as lust worthy.
Continuing the same spirited aesthetics for half the price, the younger
and playful edit of the adult collection makes us quite nostalgic for
those younger days.
